Thai Boat Noodles in Bangkok at Victory Monument (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ)

Go to for more travel and street food! Bangkok is a huge city, but the city comes together into a few central hubs, one of them being Victory Monument (อนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิ). Victory Monument is one of the transportation centers of Bangkok, a lively roundabout that always flowing with traffic of all kinds and bustling with people. In Thailand, as in much of the world as well, where there are lots of people, there will be lots of street shopping and lots of street food as well. Not only can you catch a Bangkok bus, van, taxi, motorbike taxi or the BTS skytrain, you can walk around the entire circumference of Victory Monument (อนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิ) and snack all the way around. In this video first I stop at a stand selling all kinds of dried and salted fruit. Be sure to try the dry grapes, they are intensely sour and salty on the outside making them a real strange and surprising treat. They are small but will definitely wake you up! Street bottles of freshly squeezed bright orange juice are everywhere on the streets of Bangkok and Victory Monument is no different. I stopped at a stall to pick up a bottle of orange juice - and despite it being quite sweet, it was indeed very refreshing! The bottle of orange juice cost a total of 50 Thai Baht. A visit to Victory Monument in Bangkok would be incomplete without a visit to the boat noodle alley, one of the most delicious activities to do in Bangkok. The noodles are served in small bowls, so it's customary to eat a lot of bowls and stack them up on the edge of your table. Eat and eat and eat, and when you're done, the waiter simply counts your bowls and tallies up your bill from how many bowls you ate. Thai boat noodles are extremely delicious, flash blanched rice noodles bathed in thick rich porky broth along with a few sprigs of morning glory, some pieces of meat, and a few pork meat balls. If you're hungry in Bangkok, boat noodles will come to the rescue! If you're looking for what to do in Bangkok, make sure you include a walk and and eating tour of Victory Monument on your itinerary! do they ever eat this with limes?
deburgh65 2 years ago
There are two kinds of Tom Yum in Thai cuisine. The first one is Tom Yum broth that made from galangal+kaffir lime leaf+lemon grass and seasoned with lime juice, chili, and fish sauce and finally garnished with coriander. This Tom Yum is recognized internationally. Some may add roasted chili paste or coconut milk. The soup normally made from seafood or fish base, besides pork or chicken are employed or mixed too.  The other kind of Tom Yum is specially designed for noodle. The broth itself is based on different kind of ingredients, normally from pork bone or chicken bone. The seasoning is considerably different too; it composed of: grounded roast peanut, grounded dry chili in rice vinegar lime juice, fish sauce, spring onion, coriander, dried shrimp, sugar, pickled chili in vinegar This recipe is for Noodle Tom Yum that is a different animal compared with 'international' Tom Yum one.

+deburgh65 Yeah i know what Tom Yum and Manao used to cook at a modern Thai restaurant, thanks though i look for some recipes for that
deburgh65 2 years ago
+Johnny Hernandez off course, but with different kind of noodle. normally, it is called Kwuytiaw Moo Tom Yum Manao Kuaytiaw is Noodle Moo is Pork Tom Yum is sour and spicy soup Manao is lime in Thai.

Any chance they might have used that canal water as the broth? lol

i spent so much time around the victory monument yet i missed this spot. i am so mad but than again another reason to go back. where is this located in relation to BTS
deburgh65 2 years ago
+Ethan J the opposite site of BTS station, there is a canal line across Paholyothin road up north (from BTS route out bound to Saphan Kwai or Mor Chit statiion). There are many noodle restaurants beside the canal. Just under the sky walk.

Is the boat noodles really made with blood in broth? Hmm if so I'm not that adventurous.
kcheong00 3 years ago
+Phoenix Legion i'll be honest. you should try it. it is mind blowingly good. You can ask them for no extra blood, without the blood is tastes less rich. its almost negligible if you don't eat alot of it. If you look closely, The bowls have blood in it before they pour the soup in. Its really really tasty. everytime i go to thailand its on the top of my list. I've searched pretty hard in Australia that makes it really well. Some places are close but just not the same.

Hi Mark Wiens.i really enjoy your vlog.the way you eat the food.huhu.looks like you're really eat the food. By the way.can you please suggest me one of the Halal boat noodle in Bangkok?actually am a muslim from Malaysia but i really wanted to enjoy the taste of halal boat noodles. Thank you :-)
iskandartaib 2 years ago
Just went there (the branch at Jaya One) and had a couple bowls. Can't relate it to any noodles I've eaten in the past, the sauce is vinegary and sour. The noodles are halfway between mee kuning and instant noodles (not the kuay teow I was expecting. They sell two types - Pathumthani and Ayuthaya - both come in either beef or chicken, so there's four types of boat noodles (and lots of other types of food as well). The Ayuthaya is a fair bit sweeter than the Pathumthani (I suspect these are based on local styles of boat noodles). A bowl is RM1.90 (about 16 baht at today's exchange rate). Each bowl came with a little bit of noodles, some sauce, a slice of beef and a bakso. A couple bowls makes a nice snack, a full meal would be 6-8 bowls I think. Next time I go I'll try the ka num tuay (RM1 for 2 pieces) - not sure what these are but kanom mean something sweet or a snack (I think, based on the little bags they gave out on Nok Air flights). Just noticed another branch - at The Curve, where I go once in a while. The décor is interesting - they managed to get what looks like antique rough wooden tables (and I mean rough) painted in stripes, and they look like they've been in the open for a few years!  Much like the tables at that Khao Soi Islam restaurant in Chiang Mai, just smaller. Quite authentic , except it was in a fairly posh mall.       --Iskandar
iskandartaib 2 years ago
+Khairunnisa Rubian Interestingly enough - there is now a chain of Boat Noodle restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. The one near where I live opened maybe 3 months ago. Don't know how authentic it is (they are halal after all, with a beef broth), but they're served the same way - tiny portions in a bowl, you end up eating several bowls. Have not tried it myself yet, when I went by the other day, the place was packed. I definitely do plan to try it out.Iskandar

+amna audra maisha wafi I'm not sure if it's halal or not, but mostly, boat noodle restaurants in Thailand they separate the soup boiling pot, between meat and pork, because there 're many of Chinese Thais don't eat meat as well.
kcheong00 3 years ago
+amna audra maisha wafi Try making it at home! there's beef recipes for it. It might be quite difficult to find somewhere that makes it in Thailand. 85% of Thailand are buddhists.
