The surprising habits of original thinkers | Adam Grant

How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies originals : thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals — including embracing failure. The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most, Grant says. You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. Yo can somebody invest millions for me to get drunk, high and play video games. When I do I enter a high/elite state of creativity and generate great ideas. I already have tons of them. They just need to be mined by productive ppl

I'm not really sure how you can call it being original when most of them just improved on an already existing idea or platform. Nearly every great invention that we use is often attributed to someone else completely different but the person we associated with is the person that copyrighted it and patented it. From the internal combustion engine to the light bulb to Wireless transmission even Xerox was the first company to actually create a graphical user interface or GUI. Do you have the whole thing between Apple and Microsoft founders.. I mean most of those things had been created in some form before that but they were not the ones that patented it or streamlined it for mass production. I think maybe during that time of procrastination you can kind of use your brain like a simulator you know you kind of figure out what will and will not work and it could save you some extra steps. This is still a very good video I just think it's a little bit of a misleading title.

In 5th grade I had to present an English essay to the class. We had a week to do it. I did it in the 45 minute period before her class and in the five people before me in alphabetical order. She called me to her desk after class and I thought it was because she knew what I had done and she was going to mark off points. She then suprised me by saying that she hadn't seen 10th grade essays as good as mine and gave me an 100. I still didn't tell her what I did.

well, you are not original if you wait to create something over the creativity of someone else.

My father always finishes up everything WAY ahead of time, yet he's the most creative person I know. I'm in the academic world and I meet a lot of creative people on daily basis. Everyone that met my father admired his creativity. I cannot even count how many successful ideas he's come up and went through with. He always tells me not to fear doing things because of failure because not trying is the real failure. He also keeps telling me to aim to be better than he is and quite honestly that is the biggest challenge I've ever gotten. The man would read a whole book and write a summary of it in a matter of 6 hours. My cousin once gave him a book he'd spent 3 months reading and was still half way through. My father read it in 4 hours and explained it to my cousin. I don't know, but I really don't think he fits in the studies presented. Granted, those studies are mostly accurate because they rely on statistics for predictions. However, the MOST creative people are normally the outliers that don't fit consistently with any group.

To be original, just need to be better not first ? I feel like there is different word required. Original thinkers? Or just rational creatives. Original the word has a meaning that does not fit here.

Basically *it's all about creativity.* About combinations. About trying things out and learning. The creativity and the ability to use it, is what makes great leaps for humanity.

The best example of this is Einstein. He fought with his ideas for years on end. When he was 16 he started thinking about light and then at 26, 10 years later he came out with the greatest scientific papers of all time. The 1905 great year changed the entire world, and all because he sat on his ideas for years on end.

What's with this Original thinkers. and the rest of us ? Everyone is original to an extent. Why call someone who takes ideas into action an original thinker. Aren't they just entrepreneur? Much in this video doesn't make any sense, or is just common sense. Waste of time.
