The surprising habits of original thinkers | Adam Grant

How do creative people come up with great ideas? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant studies originals : thinkers who dream up new ideas and take action to put them into the world. In this talk, learn three unexpected habits of originals — including embracing failure. The greatest originals are the ones who fail the most, because they're the ones who try the most, Grant says. You need a lot of bad ideas in order to get a few good ones. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. So when he talks about procrastination, he doesn't mean the traditional do nothing procrastinating, but rather, just don't make a final copy until the last minute? I.e. nothing is set in stone, create multiple drafts, and keep each of those drafts to obtain more diversity and variety in your idea making process?

It's a great talk, but everything he said is just common sense, more time=more ideas bc more time to think. Do you really need 15:24mins to explain this?

All songwriters are procrastinators.they rarely write something which feels right the first time. When they come back to their creation, many words/notes change. Press on the link below(WHY? by Jasmine Lamport), a relatively unknown singer, then listen to a song which started of with 350 lyrics.then it was taken down and down and down again and again.until it made perfect sense for it to be about seventeen words or as near as dammit(plus repetition). Then go to the comment section and read the comment by one Steve Pledger.he nailed the song with his comment.

This is pure garbage. This fool is wrong about everything. This nonsense muddles the soul of real poetry with his disgusting words and hurts the ones that need poetry the most. He needs to shut the eff up and crawl back under the caveman rock he came from. If you want to see real poetry Google Josef Wolff Poetry and you will see heavenly poems and truth. Not this bullshit lies.

I tend to finish projects early. Only to redo them at the last minute. In School, I used to re-read my written assignments or go over projects the night before. Then I'd be up until 3 am tweaking and rewriting. Since then I've stopped finishing my assignments early. I was rewriting everything anyway. Watching this video is part of an assignment( for a college course). I have to choose My favorite Ted Talk and Write about it. It's due tomorrow.

I feel so empowered after watching this. I never really thought of myself as a total procrastinator even if majority of people do think I am that. They don't even know the extent of intensive thinking, planning and strategising my mind goes off to from the moment a project/assessment/job is given to me until the due date. And majority of his points were so on point, I felt understood. Thank you, Adam!

13:21 - Dude in bottom left-hand corner is PASSED OUT. I wonder if the talk he just witnessed literally blew a mental fuse? Great talk nonetheless. I however think that creativity cannot yet be taught. Maybe someday, but at present, the educational system is all about churning out worker bees who are better at following instructions than coming up with new ideas. And failure? Oh, my. Failure is so frowned upon by the typical sheeple thinkers as to cause them to not even try at all. (Which was touched on a bit in the video.) Thanks for reading, folks! Go out there and fail big, and fail hard! That's my motto.

Wagner succeeded because although he had less number of compositions, they were all much much longer than that of the others. Other people had seven minute symphonies but Wagner had 43 minute symphonies. So although he had less number of compositions, the amount of music was the same

When I still used to write, I found that putting off writing a chapter for days and even weeks would eventually make for a more compelling final product as it gave me time to play out minor snippets in my head. I'd remember very little of those mental exercises when it came to stitching the whole thing together, but the basic ideas would linger just the same.

To be honest, I do all of these things. Everyone has the potential to be an original. Literally any author, artist, musician, coder or anyone who has creativity is an original, so why make a whole speech about what most people already have and do?

Good points; bad last point about which you say, Look, being original is not easy; but I have no doubt about this. It's the best way to improve the world around us. Not true at all. Though it might TEND to be a good way to improve your PERSONAL life (business profits); what if the ideas necessary to most improve the world around us have already been devised and what is primarily lacking is not original ideas; but the world-wide application of older ideas? What ideas might those be? That CAPITALISM is what is holding all (non-rich) humans back. Capitalism MEANS: war, police & poverty (and world-wide scales). So the KEY idea is that we just have to do away with capitalism. End capitalism and FINALLY we could definitely make the world around us a super place compared to now; by ending the THREE GREAT SCOURGES: war, police and poverty.

It is good to have a lot of ideas but it is not necessary to act on each of them we should use our wisdom & experience before implementing any idea.Think 1000 times before starting but don't event think for once after you have started.

Hey i happen to be one of these originals & sorry I know its in poor taste to diclair something So Wild as ones genius never the less it is my carry on luggage always onboard with me everywher i go.Im saying this because my Past thoughts have impacted the areas they pertained to allot & i can, always see any and all problems with somthing nomatter how good or bad i can find the flaws & provide simple solutions. My idieas are often simple & perfect for the intended purpose like here is one of my many many many ideas and allot come flowing in when challenge or possibility inspire. But take the world we live in all the diferent people and language's its cool for cultural identity but for travelling to & comunicating with eachother is non existent if we speak different language's & creating one global language would be extremely difficult to create, teach & learn & thats if people were willing to give it a go cause many to most will rebel Against its implacation making it very tabo for the few willimg to learn, use & teach it as they would be labelled in a derogatory manner by the mob.So my thlught for just simple basic communication for maneuvering thorough area's & enjoying some fellowship with other people who are different then you from different places to hear ther thought and opinions is very valuable so creat a universal lets say call it the travellers sign but come up witn a form of simple sign language that is introduced around the world as the tool to learn so you can comunicat with foreign tongues who know tnis as well.Sign launguage in comparison to learning actual language of a territory's region leaning to sign fluent takes a couple weeks to months & then your good with anybody anywher and in a pinch you could learn the universal sign over night in a crash coars and end up getting by really really well.Kids could learn it as a extra credit in school in one semester heck seniors can take it >before going abroad & any way you see the concept to talk to anybody around the b world plus as you sign witn people you would hear them saying the words aswell which would teach you ther language over time just by default. So who wants to pay me for ther think tank or partner up with me i do have the slogan and ground breaking marketing strategy for chevron gas company that would blow the competition away make ther brand even more boss like super hot they would be & raise ther gas sales by allot infact im sure i could sell ther gas to everybody atleast double ther sales & thats fact so if anybody can get me that meating ill pay you like a manager or agent 15percent of what i make working with the company and ovrer time that could really ad up.Let me know luv ya bye for now.

Hate to be that guy but precrastinate is not a word. Procrastinate comes from latin; pro (forward) and crastinus (belonging to tomorrow where the root 'cras' means tomorrow) so in a less direct definition, procrastinare means 'deferred until tomorrow'. A better word to define precrastination would be anticipation or if you're looking for a clearer antonym to procrastinate, proactive (proaction) works as well. People really need to stop making up words for words that already exist :/ If you don't procrastinate and you aren't on time then you're proactive. It sound so much better than being precrastinate haha.
