The Russians Are Coming: Estonia's National Militia

Since Russia’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict in 2014, nearby Baltic states have been on high alert. Estonia, the smallest country in the region, signed a military equipment deal worth 138 million euros ($147 million) last December — the largest procurement in its history. The country also has a growing militia, known as the Estonian Defense League, made up of 15,000 volunteers. They take part in war scenario exercises, with many of the members keeping firearms of their own at home. Should Estonia's sovereignty be threatened, the militia will be called upon to defend it at all costs. The organization's membership has risen by 10 percent since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, partly based on national Estonian fears that Russia will attempt to breach its eastern border. NATO has increased its fighter jets and ground troops in the country, as a show of what they say is support to its ally, yet Russia has claimed this is provocative and held its own military exercises near the border. VICE News follows 800 members of the Estonian Defense League on a combat training exercise to find out how they are preparing for a possible confrontation. We also meet with US NATO air support and speak to ethnic Russians in the Estonian border city of Narva. The Estonian Defence League makes me think of all the Estonian men signing up for Eesti Leegion during WW2 of which many later on became part of the 20th Waffen-SS Division. I wonder if the Estonian Defence League are sitting on the three hills around Sinimae and fantasizing about living up to the bravery of the boys in the '40s?

Russia would be foolish to mess with the Baltic States. As an American I would fully support US and NATO using a full frontal attack on the Russians. Remember this is not the 1940's and Russia would be biting off more than it could chew.
Gary Jarvis 2 days ago
You're going off the tracks with this one. No one is saying the Russian people would not defend the Motherland. They have an excellent track record in this regard. Really doubt Russia has been bullied by the West although Moscow may be selling that myth. Russia is a worthy adversary in a land war. Strategic, naval or airborne not so much. But this isn't about my dog is bigger than yours. It is about leaving independent sovereign nations alone.
Pedro Vaz 5 days ago
Russia needs the Baltics like they need Ebola. The only Russian threat there is is the threat that Russia along with China is destroying Western hegemony. As for the bitting.Russia is not the defenseless nations the cowardly and feminine West is used to bully, it is the West that is bitting more than they can chew. PS - Attack Serbia now like you did in 1999 and see what happens :)

G3's from the Swedish army when they changed them out for their AK5's, as a matter of a fact Sweden did donate a lot of their military ( older ) equipment during the 90's to help Estonia build up their armed forces after finally being freed from USSR.

Do you guys have any common sense at all.these Estonia Latvia lituania people.no brain at all.Russia will never attack Baltic states.it's as simple as that.in 2004 I guess when US announced NATO membership for Baltic states Putin agreed to it because he didn't give a shit about Baltic states though he said if Warsaw pact is gone why NATO is still there ?? Then fast forward 2008 US announced NATO membership plan for Georgia and Ukraine.Russia under Medvedev right away said it's a threat to Russia and that they will not allow it.then goergian war started in which Georgia was the aggressor who fired the first shot on south ossetian people and this can be proven by the EU report itself.it's online check it out.EU report clearly states that Georgia started the war.then Ukraine Russia seized Crimea because they didn't want NATO there in Ukraine.with this comparison we can conclude that Russians don't give a shit about baltics because it's not important for them.but America uses this Baltic state paranoia to sell their arms it's as simple as that.

Despite the great efforts that NATO puts into protecting Estonia, the Estonian government and its ruling parties continue attempting to undermine the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Spain by supporting Catalan secessionists. They do this despite the fact that Spanish troops are currently stationed in Estonia to help protect that country against invasion. Is that what Estonians call being grateful? If so, then as far as I am concerned Russia can have them.

If Russia ever decides to occupy/conquer/annex Estonia those militia people will last for as long as it takes the Russian military to obliterate them, which won't take long. If the militias do as well as the Finns did in 1940, Russia will just bomb the Estonian cities until the militias give up. Nothing against the Baltic countries, just saying that's what is going to happen. I'm sure they'll fight very hard, as would the Latvians and Lithuanians, but they're too small. And sorry, there will be no Americans arriving. We have our own problems that are getting worse by the day, and we're trying to get our government to stop sending troops into situations that are none of our business. We're not very good at solving problems that go back centuries.

Yes, yes, that's all very interesting. Presenting Facts & Figures, a post-war European's favourite pastime. But, assuming your'e European, your facts & figures take no account of the nature of war, it's unpredictability, it's human propensity to do that or this thing in response to the other side. Sounds like a perfect example of being uninformed, which, admittedly, Europeans often are. War is nothing but unexpected, nasty shocks requiring instant decisions which might be right or might be catastrophic. Europeans should know this better than anybody. Your'e also assuming what seems to me is a typical Western European amused contempt for Russia. Very dangerous to under-estimate them; as you know others have done so and paid a bitter price for their feelings of superiority. Two come to mind; hmmm, both Western European. As for troop numbers, one must ask after the quality of the troops, not necessarily the numbers, as my country discovered in Vietnam. On paper, there was no way N. Vietnam could ever win, and yet the days, months & years passed, and on a spring day in 1975 we were sent packing by a supposedly inferior foe. You are underestimating the average Russian soldier's familiarity with, and immunity to, hardship. An immunity long forgotten in western Europe. Your'e comment about cranking it up ; your'e saying we'll throw money at it almost as if that, and that alone, will give us our desired result. That is flippant. Technocratic. It does not take the issue seriously. In the end, it will, as it has always done, come down to whose forces are better at killing, and whose populations will support their war effort no matter the unpleasant surprises that will occur along the way. Russia holds the advantage in both those respects. They are far more dangerous than you believe.
Ted Crilly 2 months ago
Fear not my uninformed american friend. The EU has twice Russias active troop numbers. And three times Russias defense budget - this is while EU spends just 1.4% VS Russias sweating on 5%. And mans volunteer professionals from a potential 500m population vs conscripts from a 144m population. All Baltic countries are members of the EU mutual defense accord. Russia tries anything and EU would just crank it up to a 5% spend and finish the job in Moscow. Millions would die. No Baltic country is worth millions of deaths to Russia.

This is embarrassing to everyone’s intelligence, especially the people of the Baltic’s. It reminds me of how Israel and the the IDF like to explain how their gunships and jets striking Palestinian target is defensive. So, now we see the Baltic people and everyone else contributing to the surrounding of Russia via NATO as pawns, puppets, and stooges. How many military bases in the NATO realm, how many military bases administered by the US, how big is the budget of NATO, US. and then ask those same questions of Russia. Now who’s the ‘aggrsssor’? To be accurate, all countries were not equal under the Soviets. The Baltic’s, the Eastern Bloc most countries do not feel like they were treated well. This all looks like payback now. Revenge politics is how it should be presented. Is the US, South Korea, Japan looking aggressive when they train on North Korean borders? Did the Estonians see Russian military build up before NATO moved in? How many colonies does Russia have, or even had in there ideology? How about Britain? France, Spain, and now the US? The amount by which US military spending has increased this year is equal to the TOTAL SPENDING of the Russian gov’t on military? Who is the aggressor? So good job again Vice on a fantastic production.

Regimes like those of Estonia have become over 17 years US client states ,that provide cannon fodder for US Imperial wars and markets for the US arms industry. US troops have occupied Afghanistan for over 17 years, after invading the country they created a regime of northern warlords and drug barons ,which appears to be going the same way as other proxies promoted by foreign invaders , Like Vietnam they will face defeat ,sooner than later, Afghan people will defeat them

Estonia Stand Strong. I am of Polish blood, and support your cause. I feel with this video, a positive action in the right direction for determent of the major aggressor, Russia. However it may be, I enjoy the country except when they are annexing countries illegally. For this they must be kept well in checked by armed countries and armed citizens. Please stay positive as we are with you.

You have your independence. Hurry up and join OUR UNION. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. The European Union isn’t about freedom, it’s about political and economic consolidation. The Baltic States, though, look incredibly lovely. You know what they’re missing? Refugees. Economic Migrants. Illegal immigrants. Estonia needs some cultural enrichment, how about 250,000 North Africans, care of your friends in Brussels? The Russians are the least of Estonia’s worries

Russia and U.S.A is a big geopolitic game. I must say that both Russia and both U.S.A are bad because it's a game of influence. In these days U.S.A may be bad as Russia, but it's better than Russia in this situation. I'm not pro Russian, actually I hate Putin, his millionaire mafia, brainwashed people and etc. I like their culture, same to America. Their politics are better than Russia, but still, propaganda is spreading everywhere. I'm Lithuanian by the way, I wish U.S.A and Russia could just forget expansions in Europe and isolate from all of us and since Russia (USSR) annexed us in 1940 we DO NOT TRUST Russia anymore and this is not the first time in the history and we all know, that history repeats itself, especially from Russia, we are scared, scared because monste from the east can come and destroy our Baltic liberty really really fast.

The Estonian public should arm themselves as well. Unarmed civilian populations depending upon their national armed services often end up in a bad way when those national services are destroyed by an invader or when the national governments become despotic and oppress the people they govern. An unarmed people are a defeated people.

Yep, its same in all Baltic States too. In world exists 2 kinds of truth, 1 is fact based and other social. 85% Russian belivies second one, but sadly Russia is 148th place in press freedom index so little things are truth what papers or TV say them, but hey Russian media say also that West official researches are Anti-Russian propaganda like all West countrys want to Russia bad things and think exactly the same.

Half Russian speaking people dont respect us because they think that land is Russian. They just cant understand that our culture is 4000-5000 years old and we have lived this land so long. Big part is that they watch Russian media and they paint Estonians like nazis and russophobs, so Kremls plan is to make people hate each other. They support Katalonia too, not because they care about them but if EU countrys fight each other they are weaker. Basicaly Russia is in war all the time and this tactic kind of works because our Russian speaking population mostly belive all words what Kreml and media tell them.
